Reducing Phenol Discharge in Coal Chemical Wastewater with ZY-200

A coal chemical producer in China

The challenge

The client’s coking wastewater contained high concentrations of phenolic pollutants. Its existing treatment process could not consistently control volatile phenol levels, creating compliance risks and increasing treatment costs. The client needed a selective treatment method that could maintain stable performance under continuous operation without adding a complex regeneration system.

Our solution

ZY-200 phenol removal adsorbent was integrated into the wastewater treatment process. The functional resin selectively captures phenolic compounds and can be regenerated directly with an alkaline solution. Laboratory and pilot testing identified a 20% adsorbent addition ratio as the best balance between removal performance and treatment cost. Four-stage continuous adsorption testing was then used to verify stable treatment performance.

The result

The project resolved the client’s long-standing volatile phenol compliance issue and enabled stable discharge. Total operating costs decreased by 30%, and the successful implementation led to a long-term cooperation agreement. In supporting pilot tests, volatile phenol and total phenol removal remained above 99%, with treated volatile phenol concentrations below 0.5 mg/L.
